MY TURN: Nuisance petition hopes to combat crime

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Local and federal law enforcement officials this week unveiled a new tactic in their effort to restore safety to one particular Memphis neighborhood that is overrun with crime.

The tactic they are using is a nuisance petition against the gang known as the Riverside Rollin' 90's Neighborhood Crips. The stories of what the people who live in that Riverside neighborhood have had to endure are heartbreaking.

Graffiti covers the neighborhood. An elderly woman says she doesn't feel safe on her front porch unless police are onsite. Children sleep in bathtubs to avoid the random bullets that penetrate the walls of their homes. So, it's hard to argue about any plan that brings relief to people who are having to live like that.

Still, I couldn't help but think about all the other Memphis neighborhoods where bad things are happening. If this nuisance tactic proves to be successful, let's hope that it's quickly used in other areas as well. Otherwise, aren't we really just moving the problem from one neighborhood to another?

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
