More complaints come in about rats in Memphis

GERMANTOWN, TN -

(WMC-TV) - If you live in Shelby County, take a look at your MLGW bill each month and you will probably notice a 75 cent fee for pest and rodent control. But that fee does not pay for everything and it has one Memphis woman upset about her rodent problem.

Michelle Fry Smith says her dogs are turning into detectives.

Just last week, her dog, Bella, killed three rats. But Smith says many more got away and are still living under her porch, den, and near her fence.

Smith says she hired a private rodent control person, who put rat poison under the shed and by the branches near her fence.

But when the problem continued, she contacted the Shelby County Health Department. The health department sent Vector Control out and filed this report a report that said the department does not treat after private pest control companies. It said Smith would have to cancel her services with the private company in order to get further help from the health department.

"We pay taxes, our property taxes went up. I keep a clean yard and they're killing my tree," said Smith.

Those taxes pay for Vector Control but that does not guarantee that they can stop rodents altogether.

The Shelby County Health Department responded to Action News 5's requests for comment in a written statement:

"Currently there are eight (8) Rodent Control Environmentalists plus a lead. Their responsibilities are to control the rat population in Shelby County by addressing causative agents and rodent baiting. Rodenticide is applied at single family homes, duplexes, and triplexes. Commercial locations such as apartments, churches, and businesses are inspected but are placed on notice by the Health Department to obtain a commercial exterminator to treat the property."
