Rape suspect court appearance rescheduled

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - The man who Memphis police say raped a woman behind a church is now behind bars on a $250,000 bond.

Action News 5 obtained the latest booking photo of the suspect, Warren Smith. He is charged with aggravated rape, criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication.

According to police reports, the alleged assault happened early Friday morning behind Broadmoor Baptist Church on Austin Peay Highway in Raleigh.

That is where the victim told investigators she was hit, kicked, and choked before being raped. Afterward, the victim says the rapist threatened her life if she went to police. She was later treated at a nearby rape crisis center.

On Saturday, police arrested Smith on drunk and disorderly conduct charges. He was put in a police line-up, where he was positively identified by the victim.

Smith is now locked up on a $250,000 bond. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday morning, but that court date has been reset for October 15.
