Organizations step up to help furloughed employees

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Companies are beginning to step up to help people furloughed by the shutdown of the federal government.

Sam's Club, a national retail wholesale club, is coming to the aid of military personnel and retirees stung by the partial government shutdown.

Mountainside Fitness tweeted to furloughed government employees that they could work out at any of its facilities until 2014. It said it was excluding elected officials, "Because, you know why."

Sam's Club said it will waive membership requirements for the military community and families at its locations near military bases.

The shutdown has closed domestic commissaries on military bases. Families who depend on getting low-cost groceries and products for everyday needs from those marketplaces were suddenly faced with new hardships.

Sam's Club said it wanted to show "appreciation for the service that military personnel provide our members and communities."
