(WMC-TV) - A Memphis retirement community is closing, which will force some seniors to move.

Elderly residents at two privately-run retirement communities are being uprooted due to a struggling economy.

"I can't move anywhere is 60 days. But you expect seniors and disabled people to move in 60 days?" said Pamala Barnett, whose parents are forced to move.

Barnett's parents have 60 days to move out of the Franklin Park retirement community.

"These are seniors that we're talking about you haven't given then ample time to find a place to stay," said Barnett.

Franklin Park is one of four retirement communities managed by Veritas InCare LLC. Their CEO said property owners Nationwide Health Properties have been considering shutting down Franklin Park and Heritage Place since 2009. A letter went out Monday telling residents they must move by December 1.

"In the letter that they sent they said, 'Well you know because of the decline of the neighborhood.' This is a nice neighborhood," said Barnett.

Veritas InCare says they are covering moving expenses for most of the residents to relocate to their two remaining properties, but some cannot afford an increase in rent.

"It doesn't make any logical sense for you shut down a viable property," said Barnett.

Veritas says the properties have been losing money. Franklin Park is at 47 percent occupancy and Heritage Place is at 43 percent. The company says they are still working to find everyone a home, but Barnett does not plan to wait for an answer.

"I'm just going to pack my parents up and move them back to Oklahoma with me," she said.

Veritas says those who cannot afford the more expensive properties are allowed to find a roommate to split the cost.
