(WMC-TV) - Authorities arrested five students after several fights broke out at Southwind High School Friday morning, which forced the school into lockdown.

Deputies say several fights broke out on the second floor of the school around 7:30 a.m.

It did not take long for parents to begin lining up outside the high school Friday morning. At first, parents could not get their kids because the lockdown was in effect most of the morning.

The sheriff's office says numerous teens, including 18-year-old Michael Sample, were arrested after several fights broke out.

Parents say the fights are gang related.

"This has been going on for the past week. They're trying to recruit kids. If you don't get down with them, then they'll fight you," said parent Kimberly Conner.

Many parents are now concerned about sending their teens back to school.

"What do we do but sit back and wonder if your child is gonna make it home?" asks Conner.

The sheriff's office says no one got hurt in these fights. Deputies say the fights are possibly connected to a Thursday night shooting a few blocks away at a park on Easterly Lane that sent two teens to the hospital.

"There were several pockets of individuals getting into it," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington.

The Friday night lights were left off at Southwind High School later that evening. Officials canceled the school's homecoming game after the on-campus fights.

"It was kind of disappointing because our homecoming game got canceled, but life goes on," said Southwind student Ernest Smith.

Dick Kempka's son plays for Houston High School. He was ready for a rematch a year after Southwind ended Houston's season.

"We've all been looking forward to this game, and now just because of all that, it's not going to happen," said Houston player Sam Kempka.

He's equally disappointment for his friends and fellow players at Southwind.

"It's homecoming, and they should be getting ready for that big exciting moment," he said.

Sam's dad calls the fighting senseless.

"These are high school kids. What's so important that they're going to fight and shoot each other about?" said Dick.

There's no word on when the Southwind-Houston game will be played.
