(WMC-TV) - A former police officer plead guilty to sex trafficking Monday in federal court.

Sean McWhirter, 30, now faces the possibility of up to 10 years in prison after copping a plea. He was charged in September 2012 after a complaint alleged he transported individuals in interstate commerce for the purpose of prostitution.

McWhirter was busted in what investigators describe as a human sex trafficking ring. Prosecutors say he took several women to a hotel in Tunica, Mississippi. A federal complaint reveal he also agreed to transport women while on duty and in his patrol car.

Undercover FBI agents paid McWhirter for the prostitutes while he was on duty in Memphis. Investigators say they caught McWhirter on video and audio tape.

McWhirter is scheduled to be sentenced on January 7, 2014. His attorney declined an interview until after sentencing. Action News 5 called the U.S. Attorney's office for comment, but its public information officer has been furloughed in the government shutdown.
