Marines may not participate in Toys for Tots

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The impact from the government shutdown is also extending to Mid-South nonprofits.

For decades, the annual Toys for Tots drive has provided thousands of children with gifts their parents or guardians could not have afforded otherwise.

Yet, the Marine Corps members are warning Memphis parents, if the shutdown continues, they will not be able to take part in their own drive.

Volunteers with Toys for Tots stated they are hoping people will show their opposition to the shutdown by giving more.

"People (can) take out their anger with the government by supporting this effort. That's what I would like to see. We're going to show that there is a Santa Claus...regardless of the Scrooge that's trying to stop it," stated representative Rick Bagwell.

In a statement, a Marine Corps spokesperson said Toys for Tots is considered to be apart of their broader community relations program. Because of this, it is not an excepted activity and is directly affected by the shutdown.

Many Mid-Southerners are left hoping something will change before Christmas and the Marines will get to participate.
