MY TURN: Spending taxpayer dollars in Memphis

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Here in the Mid-South, we have no shortage of ideas on how to spend tax dollars on fancy new developments. On the other hand, we do have a deficit when it comes to our collective attention span.

Just the headlines of the past few days, read together, paint a picture of a community that is awash in tax dollars. The Convention and Visitor's Bureau wants a brand new convention center. The City of Memphis wants to divert millions in tax dollars to renovate the Mid-South Fairgrounds. Some other folks want $15 million from the city to renovate the Sears Crosstown tower.

The list doesn't end there.

All these projects have the potential to make Memphis a better city. The reality is that we probably cannot afford to pay for all of them at the same time. We have to rely on our leaders for the imagination and creativity to have big dreams, but also the pragmatism to know when to say when. And, we can't afford for them to make mistakes. I think a lot of folks are still scratching their heads regarding Beale Street Landing.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
