Thousands hit the streets for Heart Walk

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (NBC) -

Thousands of residents across Middle Tennessee crowded the streets near Vanderbilt to help raise awareness about heart disease Saturday morning.

The walk is the biggest fundraiser for the American Heart Association.

Tennessee has the 7th worst rate of death from cardiovascular disease in the U.S.

Hundreds of survivors came out to participate, including Mark Hines who recently underwent surgery to replace an aortic valve.

12,000 people took part in Saturday's walk, along with our own team from Channel 4 News.

The current fundraising total is $1.7 million.

There's still time to donate at www.nashvilleheartwalk.org.

The campaign goes until the end of the month.
