Organization seeks to expand support for developmentally disabled

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

An organization that helps people with developmental disabilities find jobs wants to expand by teaming up with more companies in the metro.

They are trying to help even more people become independent.

Johnson County Developmental Supports helped Chris find the job he enjoys.

"I would just like to say that I'm very proud that I'm working hard and making customers very happy, and I make them come back to see us," he said.

Many large companies in Kansas City, including Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, Residence Inn and the University of Kansas School of Nursing depend on Johnson County Developmental Supports employees every day.

Chris' manager says he is dependable, on time and knows a lot of regular customers.

Johnson County Developmental Supports partners with about 100 companies but would like to find more partnerships.

Chad VonAhnen, director of Johnson County Developmental Supports, says hiring their clients benefits businesses as well.

"We have a workforce of folks that are interested, willing and ready to work in the community," VonAhnen said.

With help from Johnson County Developmental Supports, Chris is now living on his own. Johnson County Developmental Supports helps clients set goals that are appropriate for their age and abilities.

"To be as productive, included and independent in the community as possible," VonAhnen said.

Chris is thankful for the opportunity to be self-reliant.

"I'm just happy that I'm being the person that I want to be," he said.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

It is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues. This year, the theme is "because we are equal to the task."
