LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Shoppers at Sawmill Square Mall who were looking for bargains Saturday also got lots of good information that could help save their lives. They got valuable tips on combating domestic violence from employees of the Laurel Police Dept. and the district attorney's office.

It was part of an event called, Stop the Silence, End the Violence.

Organizers passed out literature on topics such as stalking and crime prevention for senior citizens. They then went outdoors to release balloons in honor of crime victims.

"It's not like they're coming to us, we're going to them, as in giving out little happys," said Melicia Cooper, victim advocate for the Laurel Police Dept. "We're giving out cups with the information in them, such as phone numbers they can call, people they can contact. So, it's like we're meeting and greeting the public today," she said.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
