6.5 magnitude earthquake strikes the Gulf

Posted: Updated:

At 11am Saturday an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck off the Mexican shores in the Gulf of California. The earthquake was about 47 miles from Etchoropo, Mexico and about 400 miles from Tucson. The quake was about seven miles deep and there were no reports of Tsunamis in the Sea of Cortez. There were no reports of damage but tourists and residents in Mexico felt the quake, about 100,000 people live within 70 miles of the epicenter.

The quake was first reported as a 6.8 but was later downgraded, as earthquakes are always reevaluated. This earthquake happened two days after most states hosted "The Great Shakeout", a drill getting kids involved in safety measures if a quake were to hit.
