MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire went before a judge Monday morning.

Gregory Powell is being held without bond on a first degree murder charge after his girlfriend was doused in gasoline and lit on fire. But this is not Powell's first time in front of a judge, nor is it his first murder charge.

Annora Williams has lived on Coleman Avenue for 16 years. When a new tenant moved in nearby, she had no idea he was a convicted killer.

"He said, 'You have a nice garden.' I said, 'Yes, but it's a lot of hard work.' He seemed like a real nice person," Williams said of her new neighbor, Gregory Powell.

Powell, though, had previously served more than 22 years in a Texas prison after pleading guilty to killing Louis Taylor and trying to kill Mary Powell in Grayson County, Texas on September 24, 1988.

He was released October 10, 2011. His parole ended September 24, 2013.

Police say Powell knocked out his girlfriend, Alice Wells, on October 18. They say he then doused her in gasoline, dragged her to the bathtub, lit her on fire, watched her burn, then put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. He drove to pick up his cousin, then went to 201 Poplar where he told two Memphis police officers what he had done.

Neighbors are still reeling over everything they did not know about the new neighbor.

"Man, I'm disturbed. Really kind of depressed, you know," said Williams. "That's a horrible thing to do to another human being."

Powell is being held in jail without bond. He will appear in court again on October 28.
