(WMC-TV) - Three Mid-South heroes who were tragically killed in a helicopter crash died doing what they loved: serving sick children.

Hospital Wing pilot Charles Smith, Pedi-Flite nurse Carrie Barlow, and Pedi-Flite respiratory therapist Denise Adams were on their way to pick up a patient from a hospital in Bolivar when the helicopter went down near Somerville, TN.

Neighbors shared their memories of the crew members killed in a Hospital Wing crash. One said Smith would always check on her when a storm approached.

Smith had piloted Hospital Wing choppers since retiring from the Memphis Police Department.

"Done good work trying to transport sick kids," said neighbor Larry Snell. "Saw him playing in the yard with his boys a lot."

Visitors were in and out of the Smith home Wednesday where he left behind a wife and two young sons.

At the Smith's parish, St. Ann, classmates of his two sons plan to make homemade sympathy cards this week.

While in an Arlington neighborhood, where respiratory therapist Denise Adams lived, the upcoming holidays will not be the same without the longtime resident.

"It hadn't been but a couple of days since we talked to her," said neighbor Mike Walker.

Walker said he got a sickening feeling Tuesday when he heard Adams was on board the Hospital Wing flight that went down.

"It was sadness for her and her family," he said.

Those who taught and worked with Carrie Barlow said the experienced nurse died doing what she loved.

"It was her dream to become a pediatric flight nurse. That's what she did, so she fulfilled her dream," said nursing instructor Beth Street.

Those who knew them are feeling for all three families.
