(WMC-TV) - A Hamilton High School student was sent to the emergency room with a brain injury after a fight over a designer belt.

"He was bleeding out his ear and he was screaming in pain, 'My head hurt, my head hurt.' And, 'Help me, help me,' " said the mother, Rose Burks.

Burks was panicked when heading to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital with her 15-year-old-son, Cortavious. He had been in a fight over a Gucci belt.

Burks says he traded two polo shirts for his 18-year-old friend's Gucci belt. He was supposed to return the belt to William Rutherford, but Burks' belt was in his locker. He did not go to school the day of the dispute.

"I told him, 'I'm going to get your belt.' I guess he didn't want to wait. He hit me out of the blind," said Cortavious. "I just thank God I'm still living."

It happened last month on the grounds of Hamilton High School where the two teens were playing basketball. A smack in the head knocked Burks down on the concrete sidewalk where he hit his head.

Burks says Rutherford ran off.

Burks had to have emergency surgery that night. The scar on his head is still visible. It is where doctors temporarily removed part of his skull to repair a severed blood vessel and to relieve pressure in his head.

"They told me he could have died through surgery," said Rose.

Rutherford is a Senior at Booker T. Washington High School, where he was arrested according to a police report.

Burks says Rutherford apologized.

"I don't care about him, because he didn't care about me. We grew up together," said Cortavious.
