TIPTON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - An investigation Saturday by Tipton County deputies turned into a shooting that killed someone other than the original suspect.

Daniel Watkins is a cousin of the victim.

"I was down there maybe 10 minutes before police showed up. Then, I heard four gun shots and that's when it all went down," stated Watkins.

Just after 5 p.m., deputies arrived at 245 Watkins Road in Drummonds, Tennessee. Originally, they were looking for a man who was wanted for violating probation. Who they discovered instead, was a completely different person.

Tipton County Chief Donna Turner explained what happened.

"They were conducting the investigation (when) an armed party confronted the deputies. They did shoot the subject, he is deceased," Turner confirmed.

The man, who family identifies as Jake Maese Murphy, was not the same man deputies were here to arrest.

"He would do anything for anybody. I don't understand why that's how it went down," continued Watkins.

Turner told how three deputies fired shots. However, it is unclear whether the suspect ever fired at the deputies.

"It just puts an exclamation point on whatever the cases may be. There's not case that's routine for deputies, officers anywhere. When they go, you never know where people are in their life and what may trigger them or what they're gonna do," declared Turner.

Turner told how the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is heading up the investigation. At this time, she emphasizes that no one is in danger and no one else was hurt.

The original suspect they intended to arrest is now in custody.
