MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Shelby County School District Board of Education approved a resolution to lease schools to municipalities for 40 years contingent upon a negotiated sum that will help offset health and life insurance for retirees.

However, four schools including Germantown elementary, middle and high school as well as Lucy Elementary are not part of the resolution. This means SCS could retain these four school properties after the municipal school districts form next year.

The board heard from students and passionate parents before the vote Monday. The audience was made up primarily of Germantown parents, most of whom left the meeting disappointed.

"The plan to allow these three schools to remain in Shelby County Schools would displace thousands of students and literally tear Germantown apart," said Germantown resident Audrey Grossman.

The district's desire to retain control of the schools in question is based on the large percentage of students who live outside of Germantown, but the board made it clear that everything remains on the table despite its vote.

"I've seen them thoughtfully deliberate on other items, and there is nothing more important than what we're discussing right now," said former board member Mary Anne Gibson.

Superintendent Dorsey Hopson proposed last week that SCS retain operational control of some schools. One issue for Hopson is that a large number of children from outside suburban city limits attend the schools in question.
