'Wild' suspect chase video released by police

Posted: Updated:
TIPTON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The Mason, Tennessee police chief is releasing what he calls "wild" police chase video from over the weekend.

Late Saturday night, Mason police officers received a call that Tennessee Highway Patrol was involved in a chase with a suspect on Highway 70 through Stanton, heading westbound toward Mason.

The chase began in Medina, in Gibson County and traveled through Madison and Haywood counties before ending in Tipton County.

Officer Justin Fitzgibbon was heading east of the city limits to assist when he noticed the car coming up behind him. He rushed to clear traffic in the oncoming lane.

As the video from Fitzgibbon's dash cam shows, the car at the center of the chase tried to pass Fitzgibbon when it clipped the front of his police car.

The suspects' car ended up crashing into a farm ditch in the middle of a corn field, about a quarter mile off of Highway 70 between Stanton and Mason.

The Mason police chief says police from Medina to Mason are wondering one thing.

"If they kept going, where were they going and why were they running?" wondered Mason Police Chief Jim Paris. "Nobody in the car had a valid driver's license, the owner of the car wasn't in the car, there were drugs and paraphernalia found."

James Cox was the driver of the car, who led police on the chase that spanned more than 60 miles. He and his passenger, Margaret Jones, are still recovering at The MED.
