(WMC-TV) - The Christian Schools in Memphis, which run both CBU and CBHS, honored a trio of Memphians including Action News 5's Joe Birch.

In front of a packed Christian Brother High School gym Wednesday, two noted Memphis priests and Joe received a high honor. Joe and Monsignors John McArthur and Val Handwerker were granted Affiliation to the Institute of The Brothers of The Christian Schools.

"Men and women [...] who really seem to live up to what the brothers stand for become affiliated members, sort of adopted members of our institute," said brother Larry Schatz.

"It's a very formal ceremony. It has to be approved by our superior general in Rome and his council, and then there is a formal ritual like [Wednesday] ... That is what affiliation is about," said Schatz.

Joe is a graduate of Christian Brothers University, class of 1978. His wife Robyn and son Joseph are also alumni. Joe's son Matthew will graduate from CBU in December.

Joe serves on the CBU Board of Trustees.

The Brothers say Joe received this honor for his service to CBU, as well as his dedication to charitable causes and for remaining active in his faith.
