(WMC-TV) - The City of Memphis unveiled new parking meters Tuesday that will be installed in and around downtown Memphis.

The city will install 135 kiosks and 485 single-space meters starting next week.

City engineer, John Cameron, says the old meters are outdated and do not bring in steady revenue.

The big change with the new meters is they accept debit and credit cards. Between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. you will pay a dollar an hour.

Parking times range between 30 minute and two-hour increments.

"It will cost $1.6M funded in the next five years," said Cameron explaining how tax dollars were spent on the meters. "We expect because of the convenience that the meters take credit cards, that this system will pay for itself."

Single-space meters will be activated immediately upon installation.

The kiosks, which cover six or more spaces on any given block, will be activated between Thanksgiving week and December 2.

Parking meter greeters will circulate downtown to answer public questions for three weeks through the transition.

The city is working on a website that will be up and running in the next few weeks. You can call 901-636-6710, if you have any questions.
