Deputies swarm apartment complex after 8 month undercover investigation

Posted: Updated:
COVINGTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - For eight months, Tipton County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted an undercover operation inside the Broadmeadow Place Apartments in Covington.

During that time, deputies were able to buy drugs on multiple occasions from residents living there.

Tuesday night was the culmination of that operation.

It was around dinnertime when deputies and specialized gang unit officers interrupted the evening plans of people living in the Brookmeadow Place Apartments.

Law enforcement officers saturated the complex, handcuffing residents wanted for illegal activity.

"They gotta get outta here. Nobody wants that in their right mind. We're here to do what we can about that," said Tipton County Sheriff Pancho Chumley.

The undercover sting Tuesday night was eight months in the making.

Broadmeadow management started complaining to deputies about gangs, drug sales, and trespassing inside the complex.

"Well, I think its good. I wish they'd bust every drug house in Tipton County," said Covington resident Mary Tipton.

During the investigation, deputies were able to buy cocaine, marijuana, and pills from eight Broadmeadow residents.

The Tipton County sheriff says this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Chumley says arresting residents who are breaking the law is the best way to send a 'no tolerance' message.

"I know some people out here, some good people. But the ones that's taking advantage of living here on government assistance and also letting the government assist them in selling drugs, they gotta go," added Chumley.

Agents spent the evening driving around Covington, locating drug dealers.

In all, 27 were arrested and brought to jail. More arrests are still being made. The arrests are putting Broadmeadow residents' minds at ease.

"The older people here need rest and we don't need to be scared to go out and come in," said Tipton.

Many of the people arrested Tuesday night will likely stay in jail until they face a judge for the first time next Tuesday, November 12.
