MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The holidays are right around the corner and many people are already beginning to shop online.

Many shoppers order gifts online and have them delivered right to the door, often at times when they are not home. FedEx is trying something different this holiday season to avoid package thefts.

Missing a delivery because you are not home is a common problem. Even worse, getting a package delivered only to find out it was stolen.

The solution is called Ship&Get and you will find three retailers in Memphis, inside OfficeMax locations. You can enter a tracking number and with just a couple clicks request to hold the package at the FedEx Ship&Get location.

Brad Parsley has not had a package stolen from his front porch, but he says many of his clients at Audio Video Artistry installed a camera at their front door to prevent the crime.

"You can ensure that it got there, and if its not there you can see why it's not there," he said.

He says for about $300 you can buy an Internet Protocol camera that can be accessed from your phone or tablet. Though he recommends you aim the camera close to the door but facing out toward the road.

"So you can see the delivery man walking up to the door. You could see the criminal, but you're also gonna see beyond that. You're gonna see what kind of car they drove," said Parsley.

FedEx Ship&Get is no added cost. It's being tested in three Memphis locations. Visit fedex.com/shipandget for a list of current locations.

Other tips to avoid package theft:

  • Customize your deliveries, get alerts for any FedEx package on it's way to your home.
  • Considered an alternate destination like work or a neighbor who you know is home.
  • Send it to a FedEx Office location
  • Request a signature and guarantee it won't be left on your doorstep.
  • Leave delivery instructions like "leave behind the grill" or "in the bushes next to the front door"
