Students get 'shake-sperience' from professional actors

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A unique workshop at Westwood High School is making a difference in the lives of students.

The students are learning how to dance the same way people danced more than 400 years ago during the time William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, Othello, and many other classics.

"It was kind of exciting instead of dances we do now," said Westwood High School senior Dontavius Reed. "But I can imagine that they had fun while doing it."

The students are being taught by professional actors from the Tennessee Shakespeare Company in Germantown.

"I think our biggest goal is to let a student's first encounter with Shakespeare be a positive one," said Slade Kyle, Tennessee Shakespeare Company.

The teachers even have a name for this type of teaching... they are calling it shake-sperience, which basically means that the students will get a chance to experience what people did during Shakespeare's time.

"And we find that when they get to see it come to life in front of them it's a completely different experience," added Kyle.

Students say activities like these are motivating academically and socially because it gives them confidence and the motivation to try and understand what motivated one of the greatest playwrights of all time.
