MY TURN: National Freedom Award

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Nationally renowned educator Geoffrey Canada was in town this week to accept the National Freedom Award. The team at the Civil Rights Museum has a knack for honoring people whose contributions are not only extremely worthy but also relevant to the city that the museum calls home.

Certainly that's the case with Canada who is the founder of the Harlem Children's Zone. Basically, what Canada did in New York was to stake out a 24 block area where he made the commitment to educate every child and not to let any of them fall through the cracks. He later expanded his commitment to more than 100 city blocks. Canada's challenge to Memphians and to all other communities with failing schools is simple. He said we know what's happening in these schools - continuous failure over decades - and he said these are the institutions we need to actively interfere with.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210
