Acquitted: man accused of killing uncle and girlfriend with ax

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Former Marine, Joshua Cline, is a free man after jurors acquitted him of the double murder on Christmas Eve 2010.

Family and friends are still waiting for Cline to be released from jail.

Apparently, they are waiting on the bond money for two unrelated charges. However, they are breathing a sign on relief Saturday.

After being behind bars for almost 3 years, Saturday morning a jury acquitted the former U.S. Marine of all related charges.

Cline was arrested in late December 2010 in connection with the ax murders of his uncle and his uncle's longtime girlfriend. Their bodies were found inside their home on Brewer Street, near the University of Memphis.

Cline's attorney, Gerald Skahan, told Action News 5 the jury deliberated just after 8:30 a.m. before coming back with the life-changing verdict.

"The proof just wasn't there. Sometimes you get innocent people caught up in the system and, it appears in this situation, that's what it was," explained Skahan.

Cline's mother, Brenda Cline, always believed he was not guilty.

"He always knew he was innocent. We have a whole group of people, people in the parking lot, that have backed him and been supportive. We always knew he didn't do it," said Brenda Cline.

If convicted, Cline could have faced the death penalty.

His family spend most of the day waiting for his release outside 201 Poplar.

Coming up at 10 p.m., we'll hear more from his mother and show you their reunion.
