MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis firefighters are giving winter fire safety tips after responding to three house fires in a matter of hours Friday.

Friday, just after midnight, a vacant home in the 1300 block of Michigan Street caught fire.

Then, before 5 a.m., a home on Range Line Road went up in flames.

Tragically, Leslie Miller lost everything when his home on Mississippi Boulevard caught fire.

Miller's home did not have working utilities. He fell asleep while a candle was still lit.

"Try not to be too tired and go to sleep with anything on that you know can burn. Just like this, I could have easily lost my life," said Miller.

Research shows the number of house fires typically rises during the winter months.

In 2011, 44 house fires in Memphis were due to various heating sources like space heaters and fireplaces.
