MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – They are becoming more frequent: attacks on the elderly. The victims could be your parents or grandparents. An elderly man was shot in Memphis, near the intersection of Airways Boulevard and East Raines Road in Whitehaven.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Sunday evening on the 2000 block of Waskom Drive.

Police say there are no suspects in custody in connection with the shooting.

People who live on the street are shocked. One resident told Action News 5 that he heard two shots and minutes later, saw a man in his 70s walking down the street with blood coming out of his leg.

Neighbor Aubrey Burnett said, "When I came out of the house and I saw him walking back this way and I looked and I saw the blood coming from his foot or his ankle he appeared to be shot in the ankle."

Sunday's attack on that elderly man is an example of a growing problem. Attacks against senior citizens are on the rise.

On Action News 5 at 10 p.m. Monday, you will hear from one man who says his father is clinging to life after he was beaten and left for dead in a Mid-South park.

The Investigators will show you how to keep those close to you safe and empower them against attacks on the elderly. Click here for a preview.
