Mid-South Veterans Day Parade honors veterans and their families

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A royal sendoff happened on Monday for some Mid-South veterans and their families.

They arrived at Monday morning's Veteran's Day parade in a special caravan lead by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

With the Sheriff's Department motorcycles out front, veterans fell in line for the caravan that would take them from the Memphis VA Medical Center on Jefferson to start of the parade route downtown.

Army veteran Doris Caldwell said, "I enlisted. It was time everybody needed to help."

World War II veteran Caldwell showed up with a picture from her U.S. Army days. She's proud of the time she spent stationed in England.

She told Action News 5's Ben Watson, "I'm glad I went!"

"This is the Armed Forces Service Medal; purple heart right there," explained Vietnam veteran R. L. Wagner.

Wagner lined up for the parade too. He said veterans from his era were not always celebrated. He says he's happy things are better now.

Participants in Monday's veteran's parade were cheered on like heroes.

The outpouring of support was very emotional for Air Force veteran Phyllis Mullins. She marched in the parade wearing her son's Lathe's Marine military shirt.

Mullins said, "He was hit by a car and killed last August."

Department of Veterans Affairs officials say this year's caravan is the biggest since the caravan started eight years ago and has grown to include families, Veterans Affairs employees and other organizations.
