NSU's Johnson named Southland player of week

Posted: Updated:

After spearheading an outstanding defensive performance by Northwestern State in Saturday's win over Lamar, Demons' senior end Keland Johnson was chosen Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Johnson helped the Demons hold Lamar to just five rushing yards, two offensive touchdowns, and only 263 total yards in their 37-28 victory over the Cardinals Saturday in Turpin Stadium. Only Oklahoma State (245 yards allowed) limited Lamar to fewer yards this season. The Cardinals (4-6) entered the game averaging 423 yards per contest.

Johnson recorded six tackles, including two tackles for loss, one a 9-yard sack. He also deflected a lateral and recovered it late in the first quarter, getting Northwestern possession at the Lamar 35 leading to a touchdown two snaps later.

"It's a great honor, and I give all the credit to my teammates. Some of those plays I wouldn't have made without them," said Johnson. "It's a team effort, I'm all for the team, and we work for each other."

A 6-foot, 232-pound product of Forest, Miss., Johnson has 34 tackles and six quarterback hurries this season as NSU's Purple Swarm defense has moved into the top spot in total defense rankings in the Southland, allowing 372 yards per game overall.

Johnson became the first Demon to win a Southland player of the week honor this season.  He was also named honorable mention College Football Performance Awards FCS defensive lineman of the week on Monday.

The Demons (5-5) have won two straight heading into a rivalry game Saturday night at No. 9-ranked McNeese State (8-2). Cowboys' senior Diontae Spencer won Southland, state and national honors Monday after scoring five touchdowns, including two kickoff returns and a punt return, while piling up a conference record 365 all-purpose yards in a 69-38 victory at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
