MPD officer accused of assault, burglary resigns

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police officer James Valentine resigned after being charged with assault and burglary.

Valentine is accused of showing up at his ex-girlfriend's house with a gun Saturday and ordering her son's father to leave.

According to a police affidavit, Valentine, 33, used a spare key to enter his ex-girlfriend's house. Once inside, he found her in bed with a man. Police say Valentine ordered the man to get out of the bed, while at the same time, waving a gun at him.

Valentine was arrested a few hours later. He is charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault domestic violence.

In the last ten years, Valentine has been accused of domestic violence four times within the Memphis Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau. For those, he was terminated twice, only to be reinstated to the Memphis Police Department after appealing to the Civil Service Commission.

The first domestic violence case took place in 2004 and involved an argument with an ex-girlfriend over another woman. According to the internal affairs document, it was an argument that turned violent in the front yard. Several people witnessed the argument.

Three months later, that same ex-girlfriend told investigators that Valentine beat her because he didn't want her to report to her job as a stripper. In the internal affairs document it says he choked her, pulled her by the hair and struck her with a closed fist. Pictures in the case file show a large knot on the victim's forehead.

One year later came the third domestic violence claim. He was accused of pushing his way into another ex-girlfriends house where he accused her of being with another man. The internal affairs document reports that he choked her, hit her in the face, and pulled her by the hair. It also says that she told police he threatened to kill her and her family.

Those three violent cases in a row were enough for Valentine to be terminated during a hearing in 2006 only to be reinstated by civil service a year later.

In 2011, who also happens to be the victim in Saturday's reported assault, accused him of knocking a hole in her wall, throwing her cell phone, and injuring her face in the process. Valentine was terminated only to be rehired months later by the civil service.

Valentine, had been on the MPD force for 11 years.
