Owners present new design in McDonald’s university-area expansion

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The food fight between a McDonald's restaurant and businesses near the University of Memphis could come to a head on Thursday.

The McDonald's franchise is looking to relocate from its current location on Highland down the street to the corner of the Highland and Southern intersection. A new drive-thru will also be built around the building.

Restaurant owners will present plans Thursday morning to the Land Use Control Board they hope everyone will agree on.

Moving plans for franchise owners Century Management have been on hold for months after getting opposition from the University of Memphis and several neighborhood associations.

The company has submitted several different building designs but all of them have been rejected.

At issue is the proposed drive-thru lane, which critics say is not an appealing environment for pedestrians and cyclists. There are also worries that a drive-thru could drive out local businesses.

The city recommends the plan be rejected.
