Sophomore guard Jordan Smith led the Bulldogs with 14 points , while teammate Adama "Louis" Adams added 11 but it wasn't enough as Nebraska knocked off SC State ,87-53, in non-conference play Sunday at Pinnacle Arena.

"I felt like we were united as a basketball team but needed more from our leaders," said SC State head coach Murray Garvin. "We got big lifts from Karon Wright and Patrick Kirskey off the bench and Smith shot the ball well."

Ray Gallegos had 18 points to lead five Huskers in double figures and Nebraska used a two second-half scoring spurts to run past South Carolina State. Nebraska (3-0) led by as many as 13 in the first half, but saw South Carolina State (1-3) hit a pair of baskets to open the second half, cutting the lead to 40-35 on layup by Adama Adams with 18:23 remaining.

The Huskers then scored seven straight to take a 47-35 lead on Terran Petteway's jumper with 15:10 left. Nebraska went up 20 on Deverell Biggs' layup midway through a 10-0 Husker run that made the score 71-51 with 6:39 remaining. Nebraska's biggest lead was 26.

Nebraska welcomed back Gallegos and Biggs who were playing for the first time this season after returning from a team suspension. Deverell Biggs had 17 points for the Huskers, Tai Webster had 13, Leslee Smith had 12 and Shavon Shields added 10.

Freshman Patrick Kirskey finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while walk-on guard and freshman Karon Wright added eight point in the loss.

Garvin stated, "We just have to keep working and get better and we look forward to a home game. We have 48 hours until our next contest against Nebraska-Omaha so we just over this one and prepare for the next one."

South Carolina State will play the second of its two-game swing in the Cornhusker state as they travel to Omaha, NE to take on Nebraska-Omaha Tuesday (Nov.19) in a non-conference showdown. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
