Voters invited to attend debate over sales tax to expand Memphis pre-K

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The debate over a half cent sales tax to expand the pre-K program in Memphis happens Monday evening. Voters could get clearer answers to what it means for Memphis children and your money.

There are just three days until Election Day in Shelby County when voters will decide on the city's sales tax referendum and ultimately the pre-K Program in Memphis.

Community leaders are inviting voters to the Central Library on Poplar, to help you make an informed decision.

The sales tax referendum would boost the sales tax by half a cent to increase prekindergarten funding in the city of Memphis. That could mean about $47 million covering between 8,000 and 10,000 children age 4 and up.

If you are undecided or just need more explanation on the issues, the League of Women Voters will host a debate on the referendum on Monday.

Reverend Kenneth Whalum who's against the tax will be present to address his views, along with Barbara Prescott who is in support of the referendum.

The debate will start at 6 p.m. at the Benjamin Hooks Library on Poplar.

Election Day will be Thursday, November 21st. Action News 5 will be watching how this plays out at the polls and provide you the latest information.
