(WMC-TV) - Volunteers from the Mid-South are heading to the Midwest to help.

Memphis Red Cross staffer Robert Wallace began packing up Monday for Peoria, Illinois to help tornado victims.

Wallace said that he has been monitoring developments in the area where he is going. The damage is extensive.

"There were whole neighborhoods that were completely flattened," said Wallace.

Wallace is no stranger to this kind of damage. Earlier this year he went to Colorado to help flood victims; he also volunteered to help when tornadoes slammed into Oklahoma.

"We had emergency vehicles ... that were circulating with food, water, cleanup supplies. So we had medical personnel were providing disaster medical assistance," said Wallace.

Wallace is especially eager to give assistance to people in Peoria because he has relatives there.

"It seems like it's a really a difficult situation and they are going through a lot at the moment. I actually have an aunt and uncle in Peoria, and I don't know how they faired through this if they were affected by the storm or not," said Wallace.

Wallace is a retired scientist and college professor. He is praying for the tornado victims and hopes others will pray, too.

"So really the red cross is the American people helping American people in the times of disaster, and in my view that's a good thing to do," said Wallace.
