Average wait at Shelby Co. DMV centers is 2.5 hours, audit says

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Two and a half hours. That is the average wait at Shelby County DMV centers. It is something that most of us have experienced and it is undoubtedly frustrating.

According to a new report, those wait times are longer in Memphis than anywhere else in Tennessee. It is due to a problem that should have been fixed years ago.

So, why the long wait?

A recent state audit shows that the DMV office at Hickory Ridge Mall has the longest wait times in the entire state. Even more frustrating is that the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security could have sped up the process years ago.

The Tennessee comptrollers audit began telling Tennessee Homeland Security in 2008 to replace their 35-year-old driver's license information system to improve customer service.

"Yeah, we've had breakdowns and we've had issues," TN Safety and Homeland Security Deputy Commissioner Larry Godwin admitted. "We're gonna have a new system that's going to be able to handle all the different things that we do."

Godwin says the department requested to purchase an new system in April 2012.

The update he mentioned will not be complete until February 2015.

"Our goal is to get this below 30 minutes across the state on an average you know, by the end of this year," said Godwin.

Drivers say it is about time for a new system, so that their time will stop being wasted.
