(WMC-TV) - A murder suspect pleaded guilty in court Friday hoping to get a reduced sentence in the shooting death of his sister's husband.

A Cordova woman will never forget the murder of her neighbor, which is something she saw happen in front of her house.

Conspiracy prosecutors say the 2010 murder of a brother-in-law was a plot between a brother and sister.

Sandra Harvey is shocked by the deal James Smith received from prosecutors.

"He murdered a man right here in front of my home," said Harvey. "Very scary. It's taken me years to get past that. It still lingers."

Smith pleaded guilty to the murder of his brother-in-law, Frederick Matting.

Harvey remembers her neighbor Matting.

"He was a nice guy. We always talked about the yard," said Harvey.

The crime scene the night of the murder went several houses down the street.

"I just saw Mr. Matting running down the street, and he crossed over into the street, and that's where he collapsed," said Harvey.

Harvey testified at the trial for Matting's wife, but it ended in a hung jury. Prosecutors say Patricia Matting asked her brother to kill her husband. She eventually pleaded guilty to reduced charges.

Smith has cooperated with prosecutors, which is why he got a deal.
