MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The City of Memphis is putting crews into action to make sure you stay safe as the threat of some wintry weather approaches.

A full shift of Memphis Public Works employees will report to work at 11 p.m. Monday. Twelve trucks will stay on the streets until at least 7 a.m., possibly even longer if warranted by icy conditions.

The greatest threat of the icy roads is expected to be overnight.

However, many Mid-South drivers made clear they are ready to deal with potentially slick conditions.

"Just go a little slower, mostly," said a Memphis driver.

Another added, "Just try to be careful, not use my cell phone, stay buckled up, and watch for people."

Memphis Public Works employees are ready with the massive mixture that will be applied to bridges, overpasses, and major roadways.

"One part salt, three parts sand, and one part of what we consider 'black beauty,' which is coal ash," said Public Works Director Dwan Gillom.

There is 4,000 tons of sand on hand, which is enough to last workers far beyond a one or two day threat.

The biggest danger when roads get icy, can lead to what one woman dealt with in 2012.

"I just let the skid run out. You're not supposed to correct it," stated the driver.

Other drivers, have safer plans for this holiday. Gillom agreed those can sometimes be for the best.

"Sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry," continued Gillom.

"We want these guys to spot the icy conditions long before there's an accident or long before the Office of Emergency Management or police call us," added Gillom.

TDOT handles interstate highways and both Mississippi River bridges where antifreeze was sprayed Monday. However, there are concerns the rain may have washed it away.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation also wants people to keep these tips in mind:

  • Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots. These are all candidates for developing black ice.
  • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely.
  • Winter conditions can be taxing on your vehicle. Now is the time to check your tires, brakes, fluids, wiper blades, lights, belts, and hoses to make sure they're in good condition.
