Free voter I.D.'s offered to Mississippi residents as part of new requirement

(WMC-TV) - There are some major voting changes coming for Mississippi residents. Some people worry it could keep people from the polls.

Next year, people in Mississippi who do not currently have a valid photo I.D. will be able to get a voter identification card for free, which will be required by the time the summer elections begin.

The requirement aims to help cut down on voter fraud. Photo I.D.'s like a driver's license, college ID, or passport, are OK. But other forms of identification, without a photo, will not be accepted.

"I think we need to consider all of those who have been voting for years," said Louise Linzy, who lives in Tunica County.

Linzy wants to make sure all registered voters have a chance to cast their ballots.

"The most important thing again is we don't want to take away the rights of those individuals to vote," she said.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said free rides to each county's circuit clerk's office will be available to people needing to get a voter I.D. card.

Government check stubs, utility bills, and birth certificates can be used as proof of residency to get an I.D. Computers can also verify a birth certificate as long a person knows their birthday and parents' names.
