Memphis talk show host indicted for sharing child porn

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – He shared child porn images on his Facebook page and now controversial radio-talk show host Thaddeus Matthews is indicted for his actions.

A grand jury has spoken and now child porn charges against a controversial talk show host move from general sessions court to criminal court.

In November 2012, Matthews told Action News 5, "The charges are totally ridiculous."

This was just hours after posting $100,000 bond.

Matthews said, "It's out there, I can't deny that I put it on my Facebook page. Could I have used better judgment? Yes."

Controversial talk show host Thaddeus Matthews explained a Facebook post in which he shared a photo of a man engaged in a sex act with a child.

More than a year later, a Shelby County grand jury indicted Matthews on three felony charges of sexual exploitation of a minor for which he could face between two and 30 years in prison if convicted.

Action News 5's Nick Kenney spoke with Matthews by phone and he says the indictment isn't totally unexpected, but adds he didn't know about it until reporters started calling Friday morning.

He declined an interview request, but asked ‘Why me?' Something he later re-iterated to his 18,000 plus followers on that very same Facebook page.

Matthews said, "Hundreds of persons posted the picture, but I am the sole person being selectively prosecuted. While I have heard that several minors have been arrested I'm sure none of them face prison time."

A 16-year-old and a 13-year-old were both arrested, but their names were never released.

A year ago, in 2012, District Attorney General Amy Weirich said, ""We don't target anybody. We do our job."

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said child porn laws do not regard intent.

"You know, we have a tendency to 'oh my god, I need everybody to see this, I need to share this.' It's illegal to do that," Armstrong said in 2012.

As of Friday evening, the indictment hadn't been posted to the criminal court clerk's on-line records.

Matthews says he'll talk about this matter Friday night on his radio show.
