(WMC-TV) - Whether they wanted to admit it or not, it's the rematch the Memphis Tigers wanted from the moment they stepped off the court in Stillwater two weeks ago.
Memphis got dismantled in the first meeting with 5th ranked Oklahoma State, saying they were embarrassed.
This time around was different.
Shaq Goodwin had a team leading 17 points to help lead No. 21 Memphis over No. 5 Oklahoma State 73-68 Sunday night in the championship game of the Old Spice Classic.
Preseason All-American Marcus Smart, who literally got sick during the game, was held to just 12 points and had 5 turnovers for the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State had a chance to tie it late, but a turnover by Smart in the final seconds would end the comeback bid.
The win is the first over a top 25-ranked opponent under coach Josh Pastner and the first for Memphis over a top 5-ranked team since 2008.
Memphis is back in action Saturday, December 7th against Northwestern State.
