(WMC-TV) - Some city officials are cautiously optimistic about the major updates planned for Graceland.

A new ownership group says it is concocting plans to update one of Memphis' major attractions. Upgrades—making more stuff available for viewing, expanding the hotel, and using more space—would help keep tourists around longer.

"If we say we are America's or the world's number one entertainer then we are going to take steps to make sure we are going to do that," said Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins, who represents Whitehaven.

He says any improvements at Graceland will have a positive impact on business and property owners in the area.

"To hear this news and to hear this owner talk about a vision, something that we really hadn't had, we're excited about that," said Collins. "I'm also going to be patient. You know, we've been down this road before."

Perhaps this time it is real.

Collins says he expects the city council would have to approve at least some of those plans; nothing has been brought before the city yet.

Graceland says those plans should be announced sometime soon.
