Teen accused of shooting 3 people at apartment complex makes court appearance

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The mother of a 17-year-old boy accused of shooting three teenagers last week said he was acting in self-defense.

Anthony Williams, 17, had his first appearance in court Monday.

He is charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting serious injury.

Police said Thursday Williams shot three teenagers at the Hampton Commons apartment complex.

CMPD said two teenage boys and one teenage girl were shot.

Anthony William's mom, Lakesha Woods said she encouraged her son to turn himself in Friday.

Williams appeared via monitor in court. His mother was there in-person asking the judge questions about the next court dates.

In court, the judge appointed Williams a public defender and explained to Williams' mom that his bond is set at $150,000.

If it were to change it would happen at his bond hearing which is scheduled for December 27, 2013.

Lakesha Woods, William's mom said outside of court her son had been assaulted in the past. She took him to his pediatrician to get help with his anxiety. And Williams told her he wanted to move out of Charlotte, but Woods said she couldn't afford to pack up and leave.
"He was shot at the first week of December. He and his friends were walking down Milton Road some boys shot at them," said Woods, "So, my son was very paranoid. He was in fear."

Afterwards, Woods said she spoke to kids in the neighborhood and they told her people were planning to jump her son.

"He (Williams) said the gentlemen were coming up to him. He even let the guy know there's a gun. But he said the guy still continued to come at him," said Woods.

She said her son was defending himself, but she doesn't condone what he did.

"I understand his fear but I don't condone him taking the law into his own hands or anyone, much less my own children. The law is here for a reason," said Woods.

She hopes through this process he'll get counseling.

Woods also said she is sorry to the parents of the children who were injured.

Williams bond hearing is Dec. 27. And his probable cause hearing is Jan. 3.
