City council could vote or push back decision on AutoZone Park

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A final decision could be made Tuesday about whether the City of Memphis should buy AutoZone Park.

The Memphis City Council is expected to vote on the multimillion deal, despite Mayor A C Wharton asking that the decision be pushed back until next month.

Under the potential agreement, the St. Louis Cardinals would buy the Memphis Redbirds and the city would purchase the ballpark for $15 million.

The deal must be closed by the end of the year, but last week, Mayor Wharton requested the decision be pushed back until January 7.

According to the Commercial Appeal, the city has contracted an accounting firm to look into revenue projections with the purchase to make sure there would be no cost to taxpayers.

The city council has not publicly responded to the mayor's request. Tuesday, they could decide to honor that request or go ahead with the vote. Action News 5 will let you know what happens on WMCTV.COM and the news at 5 p.m.
