MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - After a city hall update, more questions are surfacing as Memphis Police dig deeper into the problem of backlogged rape kits.

The number of rape kits is being questioned once again, but it is certain the process will take at least two and a half years to clear up the thousands of kits.

"We're sending 400 kits per month," said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong.

That means the outcome of Mayor A C Wharton's pledge to process more than 12,000 rape kits will take years.

"We've been notified by several agencies that they've had rape kits in their possession for years," said Armstrong.

It is unclear if even more untested rape kits need to be tested.

"We have 12,000 in out possession. As we continue to go through the process, we anticipate some have already been tested. We anticipate some have made it through the investigative process at some point. We don't know where it stopped at," said Armstrong.

Deborah Clubb with the Memphis Area Women's Council said the number must be figured out.

"To find out how much money it's going to take and personnel to get this done," she said.

Armstrong says they already need an extra $400,000 for additional testing of kits already sent in.

"We've sent off 1,200 kits so far. Of those 1,200 kits, 74 percent of those have come back needing additional testing," he said.

The number of rape kits began at 6,000. The police director now says they have 12,164 to be exact. It is unclear if that number will grow.

The mayor is meeting with state lawmakers Friday to see if he can find more funding. Meanwhile, they will continue monthly progress updates.
