GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A motorcyclist who swerved to avoid hitting a car that pulled in front of him was hit by a second car and killed Monday afternoon, Glendale police said.

The victim, Stephen Alford, 51, of Glendale, was rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers said Alford was traveling westbound on Peoria Avenue approaching North 51st Avenue at 3 p.m. when a vehicle made a left turn in front of him.

Alford tried to avoid hitting the car but in the process was struck by another vehicle, police said.

Investigators said Alford never struck the vehicle that turned in front of him. He was the only person on the bike and was not wearing a helmet, officers said.

The vehicle that turned in front of the motorcycle fled and has not been located. Detectives said they do not have a description of the vehicle or driver.

People who may have seen the accident or have any information about the other vehicle involved are asked to call the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3000 or Silent Witness at 480-Witness.

Police said it's unclear if any charges will be pending against the driver of the other vehicle that hit Alford.
