(WMC-TV) - The Shelby County school board voted for a plan to possibly close 13 schools, but officials stress it is not a done deal yet.

Low enrollment and poor performance are among these reasons schools made it on the proposed closure list, but there will be plenty of opportunity for the community to be heard.

Sporting a "Save Alcy Elementary" T-shirt, Joyce Lindsey addressed the Shelby County School Board.

"I want it to remain open, because it is the core of our community," she said.

Lindsey said she was not disappointed by the board's vote to move forward with a closure plan.

"I'm not disappointed because the fight has just begun," she said.

Four more schools were added to the list of proposed closures bringing the total to 13. Read the schools included in the list below.

Proposed Closures

Southwest:

  • Alcy ES
  • Lanier MS
  • Riverview ES
  • Corry MS
  • Graves ES
  • Riverview MS
  • Westhaven ES

Northwest:

  • Gordon ES
  • Vance MS
  • Klondike ES
  • Cypress MS
  • Shannon ES
  • Northside HS

Superintendent Dorsey Hopson said recommendations are based, primarily, on under-enrollment and under-performance and at schools where the Achievement School District will take over.

"One of the things that concerns me is this kind of scorched earth policy where we close a bunch of schools and take the last vestiges out of a community," said SCS Board member David Reaves.

District officials stress this a first step, and that community meetings will take place before any final vote.

"I'm going to work until I am breathless to keep Alcy Elementary School open," said Lindsey.

Carver High School is a good example of how a school can come off a proposed closure list.
