PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 17-year-old boy was taken to a hospital with a leg injury after he fell while hiking Piestewa Peak in Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon.

The unidentified teen was hiking with several friends and fell off a cliff onto sharp, jagged rocks about 15 feet below the trail, a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman said.

The teen had to be airlifted to an ambulance when he couldn't walk out of the area on his own after hitting his head and hurting his left leg, the spokesman said.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he received stitches and treatment for other injuries, the spokesman said.

His friends called 911 and rescuers were on the mountain about two hours before he was flown out of the area, the spokesman said.
