Shelby County Sheriff’s Office mourns death of long-time deputy

SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The Shelby County Sheriff's Office mourns the loss of long-time deputy, Sergeant Ronald Ray. Sgt. Ray was 62 years old and died Tuesday afternoon due to complications from cardiac arrest.

Sgt. Ray was working late Friday night at a sobriety safety checkpoint operation when he became ill. He was treated at the scene and taken to Methodist Germantown hospital in critical condition.

Sheriff Bill Oldham describes Sgt. Ray as, "Always willing to help and go the extra mile in the performance of his duties."

Sgt. Ray worked in several areas of the Sheriff's Office during his 37-year career, including the Old County Jail, Patrol, Criminal Courts, Civil Field, Fugitive, Metro Alarms, and DUI.

He also held the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the Deputy Sheriffs' Association for over 25 years.
