Residents fear dangerous Mid-South intersection

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Town officials in Brighton, Tennessee have pushed for a traffic light at a busy intersection of Highway 51 and Woodlawn for a while now, but now they say there may be another way to make that crossing a little safer.

Cars, thousands of them, travel the intersection every day.

"This is a bad intersection," said Brighton resident Brandy Halsey.

Halsey and her husband cross the highway all the time.

"Something definitely has to be done. We need a light or something done because somebody's gonna die here at this intersection," she said.

Early Tuesday afternoon, at the same intersection, an SUV traveling southbound on the highway hit a truck trying to cross.

A 5-year-old girl was ejected from the pickup truck.

Luckily, she is going to be OK.

"If you turn at a certain angle, then the bar that goes down from your passenger side by the windshield blocks your view," said Brighton Police Chief Mike Durham.

Town officials say they have talked to TDOT about putting a light at the intersection.

They have even suggested closing off the cut through in the median between the north and south bound lanes of the highway.

Drivers say they are tired of waiting on something to be done.

"People think, oh we can just see and it's not that big of a deal. That's not true. If it's no big deal, they would stop getting hit," says Halsey.

Brighton's police chief says TDOT has put up warning signs approaching the intersection. They have also recently repainted the white line in the median.

But, Chief Mike Durham says more needs to be done.
